Freedom! It's a word best understood by those who have lacked it but suddenly find themselves free of their shackles. The movie Amistad comes to mind every time I ponder the word freedom. It's a movie about a group of slaves who break loose their bonds, capture the boat that was bringing them to America and are caught up in a legal battle over whether they are simply cargo that must be returned to their owner or people that deserve to be set free. In a compelling courtroom scene Cinque, the leader of these Africans, pleads with the court, "Give us free! Give us free! GIVE US FREE!" Nobody understands the luxury of freedom more than those who cannot taste it for themselves.
As Christians we live in the reality that Christ has set us free. He has broken the chains that bind us and given us a life of freedom. But why? Why does Christ offer to set us free.
